Death Certificate: How and Where to Obtain It

When someone passes away, there are many emotions left behind – and unfortunately, many responsibilities. One of the first is obtaining a death certificate. This is an official document that you will need later for further formalities.

Who issues the death certificate?

The death certificate is issued by the registry office in the place of death. In most cases, there is no need to request it separately – the funeral home will provide the registry office with all the necessary documents and take care of everything necessary.

If you decide to arrange everything yourself, it is important to know where to go.

What is needed to complete it?

In order to issue a death certificate, the registry office needs several documents.

It is usually necessary to know and provide:

  • personal details of the deceased,
  • their personal identification number and place of birth,
  • a death certificate from a doctor,
  • or a marriage certificate or other documents, if the situation requires it.

All information is usually provided by the funeral service.

When is a death certificate issued and when you will receive it?

The death certificate is usually issued within a few working days, generally within a week of receiving all necessary documents.

You will receive it either:

  • by post to the address provided,
  • or you can pick it up in person at the registry office,
  • or it will be delivered to you by the funeral home.

It is possible to request multiple copies – for example, for inheritance, banks or authorities – and we recommend this.

We know from practice that 3 to 5 certified copies are most often useful. You can use them, for example, in inheritance proceedings, for banks, insurance companies, health insurance companies or the Czech Social Security Administration. Each additional copy costs a small administrative fee, but it can save you traveling and worries in the following days.

What if I need a copy of the death certificate later?

If you ever need a new copy of your death certificate in the future, you can request one from any registry office that maintains the registry books. All you need to do is know the basic details of the deceased and prove your relationship to them.

Expect a small administrative fee. The time frame for issuing a copy is usually short – usually within a few days.
