Funeral Reception (Wake): How to Organize It

A funeral reception – often called a wake – is a simple gesture of gratitude. A place where words are not required, and memories sit at the table by themselves.

It is a moment when the bereaved and the funeral guests stop, thank each other for attending, say something to each other. Or just stay together in silence. That is enough.

What is a funeral reception

It can take many forms. But they are all united by one intention – to be together for a while after the ceremony.

A gathering after the funeral is a small thank you to those who came and an opportunity to share a memory. Sometimes briefly, sometimes long. Sometimes quietly, sometimes with a smile.

It is called variously – a reception, a wake, remembrance ceremony, sometimes a funeral feast. However, the name is not important. The most important fact is that it offers space.

Who is organizing the reception?

It is usually arranged by the closest bereaved. It can be the person who organized the funeral, but also another family member or friend. It is a good idea to agree in advance who is responsible for what – location, invitations, refreshments. And also how formal the reception will be.

The invitation can be included in an obituary, or guests can be invited directly after the ceremony. If no invitation is sent, it is not customary to join spontaneously.

Possibilities of the funeral reception

  1. A short meeting over a glass: a simple, quiet sitting near the ceremony; a glass of wine, a few words, a silent thank you. Refreshments can be very simple: water, tea, small bites.
  2. Lunch or dinner in a restaurant: the most common form – a meal with family and friends. It is advisable to reserve the place and menu in advance. Depending on customs and budget, one dish or a choice of two is served. Sometimes even the deceased’s favorite dish, as a small memory of him.

At the beginning, you can say a few sentences: a simple toast or a memory. It doesn’t have to be a speech, but rather an invitation to be open.

  1. Meeting at home: If you have enough space, you can also organize a feast at home. In this case, your own food is usually served, snacks are ordered, or each of the loved ones brings something small. The home environment can be very personal. The feast often extends into the evening, depending on how everyone feels.
  2. An unusual place: Sometimes the feast takes a form that more closely matches the personality of the deceased. A favorite café, garden, cottage, cultural space. It is also possible to meet outdoors, in an informal atmosphere. It is a good idea to announce such an intention in advance and coordinate it with others.

What is the course of the reception?

The atmosphere is usually calmer than at the ceremony. More relaxed, but still respectful. No formality is expected, just presence. Some stay for a short time, others for a longer time. Everything is fine. Everyone has their own pace. It is kind to give the bereaved space – and to say a quiet goodbye at the right time.
