Why does the ceremony have a deeper meaning?

Sharing the moments of final farewell with others gives us the opportunity to breathe together, to say a name, to remember and to give thanks.

When we say funeral, we automatically think of a mourning ceremony. It is not a custom or a form. It is not about fulfilling formalities. It is about one’s own understanding, closure and acceptance. It is a unique moment that helps to lift the burden and gives space for gratitude. It helps to name the loss and gives space for reconciliation.

Saying goodbye together in one place helps:

  • become more aware of the reality of leaving and coming to terms with the loss
  • share your grief with others
  • hear words that would otherwise remain unspoken
  • experience gratitude and silence
  • begin the process of reconciliation and returning to normal life significantly faster

It’s not about pomp or formality. Even a simple ceremony can bring relief, peace, and a sense of closure. Not because the pain disappears—but because it is given its time and form.

Farewells heal sadness

From a psychological perspective, saying goodbye is an important point in the process of coming to terms with loss. The death of a loved one often comes suddenly, or after a long, exhausting period. The ceremony creates a clear moment of “stopping” when we can allow ourselves to experience grief fully:

  • it helps to realize the reality of the loss
  • it gives structure and direction to emotions
  • it helps to anchor emotions to a specific point and not transfer them further
  • it allows the process of gradual reconciliation to begin

Without a true farewell, grief can remain “open” and unnamed.

The meaning of farewell

Rituals have accompanied humanity since time immemorial. Not because they are empty customs, but because they give order to emotions. The funeral ceremony is one of the few moments when society agrees that it is right to slow down, be quiet, and give thanks for the time spent together.

The ceremony connects the past, present, and future. It gives a dignified framework to the loss and helps preserve the memory of the deceased.

The social dimension: you are not alone

Death often occurs in silence and solitude. The funeral ceremony on the other hand allows sharing – not exclusively by means of words, but in presence.

For many of us, this realization – I am not alone – is crucial.

The ceremony does not have to be formal

A common reason why people refuse organizing a ceremony is fear of impersonality or forced formality. Nevertheless, modern ceremonies can be completely different. Individual and real. Even a simple ceremony can give meaning to the whole event. The point is not “to get something done,” but to give space for a farewell that is true.
