How a Funeral Works: Step-by-Step Guide

Funeral with ceremony

A funeral with a ceremony takes place in a ceremony hall or church. Its course depends on the type of ceremony, whether it will be religious or civil, but it usually includes:

• Opening words – welcoming the participants of the ceremony, sometimes also brief information about the deceased.
• A speech, which can be religious (priest) or civil (eulogist).
• Music and prayers – some ceremonies are accompanied by songs or prayers.
• A moment of silence during which family and friends can honor the memory of the deceased.
• Condolences to the family, if they wish.

Funeral procession

After the ceremony, the funeral procession continues towards the grave or crematorium. This step includes:

• Transporting a coffin or urn to the final resting place.
  Placing the coffin in a grave or placing the urn in a columbarium.

Last farewell

After the coffin or urn is placed, a last farewell follows. Relatives and friends have the opportunity to:

• Lay flowers, light candles, or say a quiet goodbye for a moment.
  This moment is very personal and peaceful, where it is possible to be alone for a moment and reflect.

Cremation or burial in the ground without a ceremony

• Cremation without ceremony – the body is cremated without the presence of the family, and the urn with the ashes is taken over by the family later, or the urn is placed in a columbarium.
• Burial without ceremony in the ground – the body is placed in a grave without the presence of a ceremony, without flowers or speeches.

Arranging the final resting place

After a funeral without a ceremony, the urn or coffin is placed in a designated location. Either in a grave or in a columbarium. This step tends to be simpler and quieter, but it is still a dignified burial of the deceased.
