Funeral Attire: What to Wear

Choosing a funeral outfit is not just a matter of social etiquette. It is a way to show respect – to the deceased and to those who remain.
Clothes not only say a lot about us. It is a silent gesture of respect. An expression of gratitude. A space in which form serves content.
What to consider when choosing farewell attire
Relationship to the deceased – generally speaking, the closer the relationship, the more formal and dignified the attire.
Place and nature of the ceremony – a funeral ceremony in a ceremonial hall looks different, while an intimate farewell in the open air looks different.
Season and weather – the key is comfort that does not disturb the dignity of the situation. In winter, protection from the cold, in summer, airiness. But always with respect for the event.
For women
Black is a certainty. But it is not an obligation. Decency, moderation and purity of expression are important.
Dresses or skirts below the knees, covered shoulders, a delicate blouse. Accessories or jewelry in moderation. Avoid minidresses and miniskirts. In colder weather, choose an elegant coat or jacket, unbuttoned or buttoned.
For men
Traditional formality gives way to simplicity.
Suit – black, dark gray or dark blue.
Shirt – white (if paired with a black jacket or black tie) or dark, always plain.
Tie – black, plain.
Shoes – closed, dark, clean. Never sporty.
For less formal farewells, a shirt and dark pants may suffice, but always with family in mind.
For children
Children are present differently. Their clothing may be looser, but it should still meet certain requirements.
For the smallest, inconspicuous clothing without prints is enough. The color can be black, dark blue, dark gray. Older children should choose clothing similar to adults: a simple dress or shirt and pants in dark colors. For girls, tights and shoes are suitable, for boys, low shoes or plain sneakers without distinctive elements.
Season
In summer
Choose airy, yet still formal pieces of clothing. Even lightness can be dignified. A mid-length dress for women, a lightweight suit for men, or a shirt and trousers are suitable. A tie or bow tie is not necessary. For women, black or nude nylons are recommended for dresses or skirts, despite the higher temperatures.
In winter
Layering is fine, as long as it’s subtle. Coats, scarves, and possibly dark gloves. Thermal underwear is perfectly fine on cold days, as long as it’s hidden under layers. Shoes should be warm but not too tight. We recommend closed, dark, stable, and rather elegant. A subtle black head covering is acceptable if the temperatures are really low.
Umbrella, hat, scarf…
Accessories can also be an expression of calmness.
Umbrella: dark, always without inscriptions.
Hat or beret: in accordance with the weather and the tone of the ceremony, ideally dark.
Glasses: dark yes.
Scarf: yes, in the winter months it can be pleasantly warm and also match the outfit.
And what about clothes for the deceased?
Choosing the last garment is not just a matter of taste, but of respect for the story. It can be ceremonial, it can be personal. Sometimes it reflects a profession, sometimes a philosophy of life. And sometimes just a simple, clean shirt or shroud is enough. What matters is not what the deceased is wearing, but how we will remember them.
