PEGAS attends the Together for Terramation Conference

The PEGAS funeral service visited the professional conference Together for Terramation of the Last Footprint association, which opened a space for discussion about new possibilities for the last farewell and about changes in the current approach to death and the return to nature. Experiences from countries where terramation is already legally permitted were also heard.

What is terramation?

Terramatation, also known as natural organic reduction, is a method of ecological burial, in which the human body is naturally returned to the cycle of nature in the form of fertile soil.

The conference also addressed the current status of terramation in Europe. In the Czech Republic, this method is currently subject to legislative restrictions and potential changes are the subject of professional and social discussion. Experiences from abroad were presented, where terramation is already part of the practice, for example in some states of the USA or in the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein.

How the process works?

The program also included a presentation of the process of natural organic reduction itself. The body is placed in a special container, a so-called cocoon, together with natural materials such as hay, straw or alfalfa. The process uses the natural effects of microorganisms, air, humidity and temperature. Thanks to carefully set conditions, the natural decomposition processes are accelerated and the result is a substrate after approximately forty days, which represents the return of organic matter back to the natural cycle.

Space for new perspectives

Attention was also paid to ecological cemeteries and other forms of natural burial. The discussion showed that in addition to technological and legislative issues, the broader topic of man’s relationship to nature, the landscape and the options that people have when deciding on the form of their last farewell is increasingly being opened up.

The meeting offered the views of experts from various fields and opened up space for reflection on how different forms of farewell can coexist, which respect individual wishes, values ​​and life attitudes.
